Induction of neuroendocrine differentiation in the LNCaP prostate cancer cell line. The phase-contrast photomicrograph was taken 3 days after treatment with epinephrine and interleukin-6 (IL-6). The differentiated morphology is characterized by rounding of the cell body and extension of branched neuritic processes terminated by growth cone-like structures. Convergent signaling events initiated by IL-6 and
-adrenergic receptor agonists induce profound morphological and biochemical changes that may influence prostate cancer progression. (See related article on p. 8471.)
