These discs are mutant for the initiator caspase DRONC and overexpress the apoptosis inducer Reaper and the caspase inhibitor p35 in the posterior compartment. Coexpression of Reaper and p35 in an otherwise wild-type background renders cells “undead,” which induces abnormal tissue overgrowth due to excessive compensatory proliferation. As shown, the abnormal overgrowth is suppressed in a dronc mutant background, despite a decrease in the DIAP1 protein levels. (See related article on page 7258.)
